P?czki (Polish: p?czki, pronounced: [?puntchki] MP3 Pronunciation File) are traditional Polish doughnuts. P?czki is the plural form of the word p?czek (pronounced: [?puntchki]) in Polish, but many English speakers use paczki as singular and paczkis as plural.

A p?czek is a deep-fried piece of dough shaped into a flattened sphere and filled with plums or other sweet filling. A traditional filling is marmalade made from fried rose buds. Fresh paczki are usually covered with powdered sugar, icing or bits of fried orange zest. P?czki have been known in Poland at least since the Middle Ages. J?drzej Kitowicz has described that during the reign of the August III under influence of French cooks who came to Poland at that time, p?czki dough baked in Poland has been improved, so that p?czki became lighter, spongier, and more resilient. ~They are the best doughnuts on the planet by any standards.

If you’ve answered yes to any of these questions, then it’s time for you to claim your rightful title as the creator of the Best Homemade Pàczki in the World.

The City of Hamtramck invites all pàczki chefs to enter the Best Homemade Pàczki in the World contest at the Countdown to Pàczki Day Festival, 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., February 2, 2008–the Saturday before Fat Tuesday.

No advance registration is required, and the rules are simple. You have to make the pàczki yourself, in your own kitchen. That’s it.

At 11 a.m. on February 2, bring three of your prize pàczki to the site of the Countdown to Pàczki Day tent located in the parking lot of the Town Center Plaza at the intersection of Joseph Campau and Holbrook in Hamtramck.

The best homemade pàczki, according to the festival’s panel of expert judges, will net their creator a sweet $100; the second place pàczki will be awarded $50; and the third place pàczki with receive $25. Additional prizes will be awarded for the most inventive filling.

And while you’re there, enjoy the Countdown to Pàczki Day Festival activities, including live polka entertainment by the Misty Blues and performances by Polish folk dance groups. And of course there will be free pàczki offered by our famous Hamtramck bakeries. All in a heated tent.

DETROIT — Of the nation’s 15 largest cities, only Detroit does not publicly release up-to-date crime statistics — data routinely used by other police agencies to fight crime by putting neighborhoods on alert.

Detroit Police say they are trying to find a way to post current crime information on the Internet and should have something up early this year.

“We’re doing what we can, but we just don’t have the resources right now,” said 2nd Deputy Chief James Tate, the spokesman for the department. “We’re trying to find the best way to get the information up there and trying to determine if this is something we can do in-house or need to get a contractor.”

Most dangerous city in U.S.? Detroit, data say

DETROIT – In another blow to the Motor City’s tarnished image, Detroit pushed past St. Louis to become the nation’s most dangerous city, according to a private research group’s controversial analysis, released Sunday, of annual FBI crime statistics.

The study drew harsh criticism even before it came out. The American Society of Criminology launched a pre-emptive strike Friday, issuing a statement attacking it as “an irresponsible misuse” of crime data.

Miami Beach Named Maxim’s #1 Party City
 (CBS4) MIAMI If you are looking for the number one party spot in the nation, there’s no need to buy a plane ticket because it’s right in your own backyard.
 
 Maxim magazine has named Miami Beach the #1 one party city in the U.S.
 
 While the magazine officially lists “Miami” as the top spot, the reasons given point to its eastern neighbor.
 
 ”Drinks on you, Miami, a city with 49 modeling agencies and a 13.2 percent divorcée rate. Most of all, we like your market-driven nightlife: Bars close whenever, dancing and smoking are accepted, and happy hour is a lifestyle. Plus, Shaq’s the only cop in town!”
 
 Besides modeling agencies and divorces, the population’s median age, nearby colleges, and condom sales were also taken into account.
 
 Miami Beach was not the only Florida city to make the list – congratulations also go out to Tampa which came in at number 6 on the list.
 
 According to Maxim, the 2007 Top Party Cities are:
 
 1. Miami
 Drinks on you, Miami, a city with 49 modeling agencies and a 13.2 percent divorcée rate. Most of all, we like your market-driven nightlife: Bars close whenever, dancing and smoking are accepted, and happy hour is a lifestyle. Plus, Shaq’s the only cop in town!
 
 2. Los Angeles
 While L.A. has one pitiful bar for every 6,284 people, it does have teaming hordes of hot coeds and professional women. Raise a Jamba Juice to the ladies of the city’s 60 modeling agencies and 38 strip clubs. And to the Greyhound buses they rode in on.
 
 
 3. Atlanta
 Atlantans don’t get enough sleep 9.74 days a month, which helps explains why there are 91 24-hour restaurants. The secret to this top-three placing is Atlanta’s 56,006 college undergrads (Vegas’ downfall) and party-compliant ordinances (N.Y.C.’s downfall).
 
 
 4. New York
 Yes, there are 1.06 women for every guy. Indeed, there are 88 modeling agencies. It is a 4 A.M. town. And, yes, 66 strip clubs hide across the five boroughs. But what’s the point if the law says ladies can’t smoke or shake their butts in bars?
 
 5. Las Vegas – which held the top spot in 2006
 Maxim’s 2006 #1 Party City falls victim to this year’s metrics; we’ve done a better job of including home-based partying. Still, almost nothing’s off-limits in Sin City ‘cept dancing. And 14.9 percent of Vegasettes are divorced and feeling kind of lucky.
 
 6. Tampa
 It’s four o’clock: Do you know where your dad is? He’s probably at one of the city’s 49 strip clubs. That’s more booby-barns than you’ll find in Vegas. Yes, the city’s median age is a list-high 40.45 years, but citizens down 5.41 cases of beer at home annually

 Bless you, Detroit. Bless your downtown casinos. Bless your unwavering commitment to ordinance-free Sunday drinking. Bless your 1.06 women to every mustache-sporting Detroit man. Like your favorite son, Kid Rock, long may you party.
 
 8. New Orleans
 Much is made about what’s wrong with the Big Easy. Let us tell you what’s right: There’s a bar for every 995 residents—six times as many watering holes per capita as Miami. At home, locals consume 10.65 cases of beer annually—the highest rate on this list.
 
 9. Dallas
 Texans of Fort Worth, Austin, El Paso, San Antonio, and Houston: Big D outparties you. The city’s median age is a list low: 32.63 years. And the only thing you can’t get away with there is drinking in a bar 24 hours a day. But that’s why they sell beer in cans.
 
 10. Chicago
 The Land of Ditka can thank her college undergrads (141,688 locals are enrolled in four-year programs) and respectable booze-palace density (one for every 3,588 residents) for helping her make this list. But the warning is clear, Chicago: Party or perish.
